Nineteen Nights

Solo Exhibition By Rozita Nosrati2 to 23 October 2020

Having completed her academic studies, which included work on faithful representations of nature, Rozita decided to dedicate a period of her professional life to researching and testing the use of different tools and materials. She then began to create works in a conceptual and objective manner using photos or any other visual resource, with a focus on drawing and printmaking. The fruits of this process were works which displayed a more imaginative atmosphere.

In the spring of 2018, Rozita once again turned to painting and drawing directly from models and spaces, beginning with nature and ink paintings, and then moving on to oil pastels, and occasionally a combination of these two media.

With regard to “Nineteen Nights”, Rozita states, “The idea of depicting trees illuminated by city lights had tempted me for many years. The most important concern I had in creating this collection was faithfully capturing how light and darkness playfully interact on trees and buildings and their windows during the waning moments of the day. I decided on Keshavarz Blvd as the location because I witnessed this playfulness on its buildings and trees during my daily commute.

I started in the summer of 2019. I would commence my work at nights when the light of day would begin to fade. I would go to Keshavarz Blvd and stay there till around 11 PM, sitting on its benches and painting. And then I would walk back to my studio when I was done.”

This collection consists of 19 works of soft pastel on cardboard representing Keshavarz Blvd at night which the artist painted in the span of a year.
